Rheumatic diseases are a group of inflammatory diseases that are associated with impaired function of one or more connective organs of the body and usually involve joints, ligaments, tendons, bones and muscles (they may even involve internal organs). They are generally classified into two categories: systemic autoimmune and non-systemic. The first category, which is more debilitating, includes rheumatoid arthritis (RA), gout, Sjögren’s syndrome (SS), fibromyalgia, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and scleroderma, the most prominent disease in this category being rheumatoid arthritis. The most prominent disease in the second category is osteoarthritis. Other diseases in this category include tendonitis and bursitis.
