Possible drug interactions
Dexamethasone increases the metabolism of isoniazid and salicylates.
This medication causes an increase in blood sugar, which may require adjustment of insulin dosage and oral blood sugar-lowering medications.
Dexamethasone may slightly increase the serum potassium levels caused by diuretics. Hypokalemia may increase the risk of toxicity in patients receiving digoxin concomitantly. Concomitant use of barbiturates, phenytoin, and rifampin may reduce the corticosteroid effects of dexamethasone by increasing its hepatic metabolism.
When used concomitantly with estrogens, these drugs may decrease dexamethasone metabolism by increasing transcortin concentrations, thereby prolonging the half-life of corticosteroids by increasing protein binding.
Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding
Use in pregnancy Category C
Use with caution during breastfeeding.
